Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of the arts and her creative side. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nursing assistant so that she could have an opportunity to study and literature, or even theater. She showed DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay discovered through her example that art can be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay had a mother who was socially aware and taught her to make use of the arts as a way of expressing herself. DuVernay, who grew up with her family in Compton, spent each summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay would use the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she received certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. DuVernay began her career as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash inside the house that belonged to a member of the jury. Her disappointment was evident in her journalistic duties and decided to change to the public relations industry. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in small production studios right after she graduated from school. She was hired in 1999 and established her own firm that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. The company launched a number of lifestyle and promotion networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
